Windows 8 Consumer Preview in Virtual Machine: Installation Experience

18 Apr, 12

Today I am able to run Windows 8 Consumer Preview OS inside Oracle VirtualBox successfully. The underlying host is  Windows 7 Home Edition operating system.

To do the setup I downloaded following softwares:

1. VirtualBox 4.1.12 for Windows hosts (VirtualBox-4.1.12-77245-Win.exe)
From https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

2. Window 8 Consumer Preview Setup (Windows8-ConsumerPreview-32bit-English.iso)
From http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso

Following links describe the steps we need to follow in order to complete the installation:

Virtual Box is installed in around 5 minute and then I created a new virtual box with proper setting to install Window 8 and then initialize the installation using the .iso file. It took around 40 minute.

In around 45 minute I can login into Window 8. If you are offline(not connected to internet), it would allow you to create an offline account. But you can personalize the Window 8 only after login with Windows Live ID.
